I think Indrapala really hits it home: the Munasinghe's experience illustrates how journalism can be a force for good. What an excellent and moving article.

I had the pleasure of knowing Rich Ahern in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He was a talented and compassionate man who altered the trajectory of my life for the better. To this day, as I walk by 336 1/2 South State Street, I look up at the windows and think of Rich, his sketches, and the lofty space he cultivated as Arborvitae.

Why on earth is this such a big deal to any of you. Why can a smoker not be free to smoke on campus? OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDINGS AND AWAY FROM ANY DOOR.

You anti smoking green nazi yuppies need to let people do as they please. We are not taking a drag in the bathroom or firing one up in math class. This is outside, completely ventilated and last time I checked NOT OWNED BY YOU.

I for one can't wait until you pulp munchers demand that if you do not drive a hybrid you cannot park in the parking lot. It all boils down to a matter of simple freedoms. I can't ban tofu or soy products or demand that none of you enter the building reeking of garlic and chic peas. Yet somehow all of the sudden non smokers have the ability to tell smokers they cannot step out side and enjoy a simple pleasure. Get real people, simply because you shun something does not make it wrong.

The rest of us accepted long ago the udder lack of ability to control existence, it's time the rest of you accept this aswell. Stop infringing on another persons right to do something they enjoy simply because you feel you are fighting some imaginary war with Philip Morris.

If I cant smoke on campus, You folks shouldn't be allowed to use all of your wireless technology like cell phones and PDA's either. What, you didn't realize that RF and other wireless transmission methods have a direct link to cancer too? huh, and its all around you at any given second of any given day! O M G MOON FLOWER, SUNBEAM QUICK SOMEONE WRITE JENNIFER GRANHOLM before were allowed to keep another simple civil liberty. You smiling monsters make me ill. It's almost as if you all completely lack empathy.

"This is their one week away from home and away from their job. So we were a little more lax than we would normally be, yes," he said. Wait a minute, are you serious? It's o.k. for union derelicts to smoke and drink on campus but not students? while at school I'm away from my family and home so it's cool to smoke and drink on campus? Good luck Larry with any student that comes to your office because they were caught smoking on campus. What a joke! Just fix the parking nightmare already. Thank you Washtenaw Voice for reporting this story and keep up the good work!

Do they really think the parking structure is gonna create less of a havoc? I think if it gets put up your gonna see way more havoc than you already do.
There is parking.. Just a lot of students are too lazy to park far away from their class or from a building because it will apperently kill them to walk..
I agree that the parking structure is a huge waste of time and money. Find a better way to spend the money than a stupid parking structure.

The smoking policy At WCC is not a joke, however, enforcement of it is. I see students AND faculty smoking around campus all of the time. And the crazy thing is that they are not hiding when they do this! They are near doorways and walkways, not behind bushes or the far reaches of the parking lot. I have called campus security many times to report smokers and the head of security has assured me that this is something they are on top of, however, I beg to differ. I think that they should be accountable to the students and publish monthly reports on how many ticket/citations they are issuing and how many suspensions are enforced.

This is upsetting, but I'm not at all surprised. Rex links to the policy above, which makes it very clear that "smoking will not be permitted anywhere on the campus." There is no qualifier that anyone is exempt from this. It seems true to me that these high-profile union members, which brought money into campus, were indeed allowed to get away with whatever they liked. The heavy drinking is crazy, and the breach of the smoking policy is unacceptable as well.

However, having attended WCC as a student for the past year, I know, as well as everyone else, that the "smoking policy" is a joke. That it's never enforced. That many people get away with smoking on campus. That even the maintenance people that work for the school smoke in plain sight on campus. It's laughable. If the school isn't going to make any effort to enforce the policy, the entire policy becomes useless. It's just another PR gimmick. "Sure, we're smoke free. We said so."

President Whitworth shouldn't be able to get away with the kinds of lax statements that he makes. Undermining the school's policy, at least this time, is fine with me? Okay, good to know. He only responds so callously to the Washtenaw Voice's inquiries, in this and other articles, because he knows none of the students can be bothered to call him on it. Students at WCC need to demonstrate a stronger opinion that they're unhappy with the way certain members of the WCC administration choose to run things.
