The Voice wins design, writing, photography awards

The Washtenaw Voice was recognized by the Michigan Press Association college division with awards for graphic design, writing and photography published during the 2018-19 academic year. The awards were announced last Thursday.

In graphic design, the judges awarded:

  • First place in non-front page design: Vardan Sargsyan for his Jan. 14, 2019 feature front, “An aerial glimpse into WCC history.” Jan. 14, 2019 
  • Sargsyan also won second place in front page design. That award was based on a sample of three front pages.

In writing categories:

  • Voice editor Lilly Kujawski won first place in the feature story category, for the Feb. 25, 2019 story “Student rewrites his story.”
  • Kujawski also won first place in the category “best writer.” That award was based on a sample of three stories.

In photography:

  • Former Voice photo editor Lily Merritt won second place in news photo for an April 8, 2019 front-page image accompanying the story “Marchers take to the streets to protest sexual violence.”
