The Voice won awards from the Michigan Community College Press Association, including first place in the general excellence category.
The Voice also won an additional 19 individual and group awards, including top honors for in-depth and multi-media reporting, photo essay, sports news photo, sports feature story and critical review. Voice editor Lilly Kujawski was named student journalist of the year.
Kujawski’s reporting on the cost of WCC’s new website provided “the best example of public affairs reporting (and holding college officials accountable) that I read in the contest,” said judge Dave Clark, director of student media at Central Michigan University. “…Her strengths as a journalist, editor and team leader extend well beyond the work that carries her byline,” Clark noted in his judging comments. “The paper is well edited, well designed and delivers a great reading experience for readers online and in print.”
The MCCPA contest is held every year by CMU and its journalism department. The judges are working journalists and professionals in related fields.
