No Bad Weather #1: Finding joy in a COVID winter

By Jessica Pace

There’s a saying in Scandinavian culture, where winter days are sunless and icy– “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.” In an effort to clothe ourselves against a season of what is sure to feel like “bad weather,” the Voice presents “No bad weather: Finding joy in a COVID winter.” With topics ranging from reading the tarot and digging up local history to baking bread and cold-weather sports, we hope you’ll find something to warm you up while you keep yourself and your loved ones safe this winter.

“When people say ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,’ it’s not true, because you can reinvent yourself and learn new things whenever you want.” Jonathan Van Ness

This week: the case for getting dressed to impress even if the only person you’re impressing is yourself.

“Clothing is a highly visible medium of communication that carries a flood of information about the wearer.”  Kwon, Yoon-Hee “Clothing and Self Perception” Journal of Social Behavior and Personality, March 1994, pages 129-139

Why get dressed? It’s science.

  • Studies show people who feel good about the clothes they’re in tend to feel more competent, responsible, cheerful, sociable, friendly, professional. (From same journal article listed above)
  • Women tend to report feeling these effects more than men.

“How you take care of yourself is how the world sees you—it’s OK to have a relationship with yourself.”   Jonathan Van Ness

Finishing Touches:

Foundations:

    • Skin Care Routines
      • In the morning:
        1. Rinse or gently cleanse face
        2. Apply toners and serums (antioxidants recommended)
        3. Add creams and spot correctors if needed.
        4. Moisturize
        5. Apply SPF
      • At night:
        1. Remove makeup
        2. Cleanse
        3. Apply serums, creams, or exfoliants (just choose one treatment per night)
        4. Moisturize
        5. Apply night cream
    • Hidden Superpowers
      • Choosing the right foundation garments can change your whole outfit.

Makeup Tips:

      1. Punchy eyebrows help dress up your face even with a mask on.
      2. Wear a bold lip with lots of overlining for extra plumping. Apply setting powder if you’re wearing it under a mask!
      3. Play up the eyes with funky eyeliner and shadow, bright colors and cat-eye wings.
      4. Highlighter gives a wide-awake glow for back-to-back Zoom calls.

“The habit of applying warpaint outlasts the battle.” Angela Carter, “Wise Children”

Don’t forget to accessorize!

      • Add texture, sparkle, color, and personality with hats, jewelry, neckwear, shoes, bags, socks, and gloves.

“Indulge yourself–you deserve to be impressed.” Rosalind Jana, Refinery29
