The Voice returns to publication under new leadership

We’re back! After a brief pause, we are honored to welcome our new adviser, Ameera Salman, to the team. Salman worked for Eastern Michigan University’s student-run publication, The Eastern Echo, from Fall 2022 to Fall 2025. They were the editor in chief before earning their bachelor’s degree in journalism, alongside a minor in urban studies. The Voice team is looking forward to the new experiences and learning opportunities that Salman’s expertise will bring.

Meet the adviser

An Ann Arbor native, Salman took summer classes at Washtenaw Community College while studying at Eastern Michigan University, but she describes this semester as “mostly” her first experience with The Voice. Salman heard much about the program while working at The Eastern Echo, after a number of former Voice staff members transferred to the university.

“It was really great to meet some of the former students from The Voice at The Echo. And now we’ve kind of swapped places, so that’s been really cool,” Salman said. “They are doing a great job over there, and I really appreciate the hard work and appreciate them for taking care of something that I loved so dearly and still do. So I’m really excited to get to know something that they also love so dearly and have put so much time into.”

In addition, this semester we will be shifting to a monthly print publication schedule, with the first issue hitting newsstands across campus on February 24. Our goal is to serve our readers with timely online updates alongside our usual print edition. More details will be available soon.
